Choosing the Perfect Destination Wedding Venue
How to find the ideal setting for your celebration away from home.
DESTINATION WEDDINGS
One of the most exciting — and sometimes overwhelming — parts of planning a destination wedding is choosing the venue. With so many beautiful places in the world, it can feel like anything is possible (and it is), but narrowing down the options takes a little strategy.
Here’s how I help my couples choose a location that fits their style, priorities, and guest list — and how you can start thinking about yours.
1. Start With the Setting That Speaks to You
Before we talk guest counts or logistics, I always ask my couples to describe the setting they imagine when they picture their ceremony. Are they barefoot on a beach in Mexico? Tucked away in a private garden in Italy? On a terrace overlooking the ocean at sunset?
That mental picture gives us direction. Once you know what kind of atmosphere you want — tropical, rustic, European, adventurous, peaceful — we can find venues that bring it to life.
2. Think About Your Guest List (and Their Experience)
Some couples want a big celebration with extended family and a wide circle of friends. Others want something small and deeply personal. Neither is right or wrong — but it does shape the kind of venue that will work best.
For larger weddings, I often recommend places like Sandals or Beaches Resorts, which are well equipped for group bookings and big celebrations. They offer spacious accommodations, built-in activities, and flexible event spaces.
For more intimate weddings, boutique resorts or private villas often make more sense. They create a cozy, romantic vibe and allow for more one-on-one time with each guest.
3. Choose a Destination That Makes Planning Easier
Some destinations are simply better equipped for weddings than others. I tend to recommend places that offer:
Good accessibility for your guests
A range of trusted local vendors
Reliable weather during your target date
Venues with wedding packages or on-site coordinators
When a destination checks all those boxes, it usually means smoother planning and fewer surprises.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
There’s a lot to consider when planning a destination wedding — but you don’t have to go it alone. I work with couples to narrow down options, coordinate travel, communicate with resorts, and make sure everything comes together beautifully.
Even if you have a strong vision, having someone in your corner who knows the ins and outs of destination planning can turn a dream into reality (without the overwhelm).
